National Indoor Plant Week
Celebrating National Indoor Plant Week: Bringing Nature Indoors Since 2007
Every September, during the third week of the month, businesses, schools, and homeowners across the country celebrate National Indoor Plant Week—a special occasion dedicated to raising awareness about the many benefits of indoor plants.
What many people don't realize is that National Indoor Plant Week was founded in 2007 by our very own Mark Martin, an award-winning plant expert and the founder of Interior Tropical Designs. Mark created this annual observance with a simple but powerful mission: to help people understand how indoor plants can transform the spaces where we live, work, learn, and heal.
More Than Just Decoration
Indoor plants do much more than add beauty to a room. Research continues to show that incorporating plants into interior environments can positively impact both physical and emotional well-being.
Studies have found that indoor plants can:
- Improve mood and reduce stress
- Increase productivity and creativity
- Enhance concentration and memory
- Create a stronger connection to nature
- Help foster a sense of calm and well-being in homes and workplaces
In today's fast-paced, technology-driven world, many of us spend nearly 90% of our time indoors. Bringing living plants into our spaces helps reconnect us with nature and creates environments that feel more welcoming, comfortable, and alive.
Nature's Air Purifiers
One of the most talked-about benefits of indoor plants is their ability to improve indoor air quality.
Plants naturally absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, but certain varieties can also help reduce volatile organic compounds (VOCs)—chemical pollutants commonly found in carpets, furniture, cleaning products, paint, printer ink, and other everyday materials. Research has shown that indoor air can sometimes contain significantly higher levels of pollutants than outdoor air, making indoor plants a valuable addition to healthier living and working environments.
As Mark often says:
"The oxygen arrives when the plants do."
Free Plants, Education, and Community
One of the traditions of National Indoor Plant Week is giving away free plants to members of the community. These giveaways are designed to introduce people to the joy and benefits of indoor greenery while encouraging them to experience firsthand how plants can enhance their daily lives.
A single plant can be the beginning of a lifelong appreciation for nature indoors. Whether it's placed on a desk, in a classroom, a healthcare facility, or a living room, that plant becomes a living reminder of the connection between people and the natural world.
The Impact of Interior Plants
Indoor plants have been shown to:
- Reduce feelings of anxiety and depression
- Create more positive and productive work environments
- Help soften indoor noise levels
- Increase humidity and comfort within buildings
- Promote healthier, more inviting spaces for employees, customers, and families
These benefits are why businesses, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and homeowners continue to invest in professionally designed interior landscaping.
